One thing to watch out for- sometimes shows disappear due to rights battles, or contracts expiring, or whatever. If not, well, watch the stuff on the DVR. Most of the shows have an educational or news slant. Variety-wise, they run shows like Gatten!, Tanken Bakumon, Tokoro-san, Honma and a few others, but not a whole lot of variety IMO. (Because you aren't the target market, Japanese expats are. I think there's even an Enka show on once a week. They also show Kouhaku twice on New Years' Eve. I'm not a huge fan, but they have a few shows on there. They do a good job with music shows, if you like JPop. You'll get what they can get from other networks, and what NHK is showing. You won't always get the most popular ones on other networks like Fuji or Ni-Tere.
HOW TO WATCH JAPANESE TV IN ANOTHER COUNTY SERIES
So are the 1-hour documentaries on Sunday night.ĭrama-wise, you'll get the Taiga drama, the daily 15-minute morning drama, and usually 6-7 other series per season. (Not always.) The Sunday morning news programs are great, too, if you like news. The news is all NHK, and usually live for breaking news (like the Tsunami, or elections, or w/e), or sometimes shifted an hour at the most for newscasts. The biggest factor for me besides that is the time-shifting for non-news/non-live programming.
HOW TO WATCH JAPANESE TV IN ANOTHER COUNTY TV
I tune to it, and I get JP TV without having to think about it or screw around with finding servers, VPN, or any of that. Yeah, it's stupid expensive for 1 channel, but it's hard to beat for ease of use IMO. That's just a very few NHK programs in EN. (And it's ALL Japanese, no English at all, unless you turn on the subtitles. So I've stuck with TV-Japan, even though it's $25/month. I've been looking for a few years, and as soon as something that looks good and affordable pops up, it disappears. There really aren't a whole lot of good options, I'm afraid. I saw your question in the other thread in r/learnjapanese, sorry I didn't get to it, but that thread was getting a little out of hand, and I didn't want to get bogged down in it. they'd be on while I'm getting ready for work in the morning, which would be perfect.) It's unbelievable how bad my luck has been.Ĭustomized and already set-up playlists like WilsonJJ and BAKACHEWYCHOMP's Plex playlists don't have the stuff I'm looking for, which is music-related programming (Japan Countdown, CDTV, Music Station) or recent TV dramas (since downloading & keeping up with what's good is REALLY hard, I'd prefer to watch live. but they all stop working, fail, get shut down, etc.

TVapp.so was excellent until it stopped working (getting WOWOW Live was AMAZING!!), and Niji before that, and I tried a few random P2P TV apps like TVAnts in the past. $15 is pushing it, but if that's the only option I have, that works too. $25 for a package that included NHK, TV Tokyo, Fuji TV, and maybe 2-3 others I could MAYBE do, but for one channel? I just don't think that much is reasonable. TV Japan was $25 a month to add to my cable last I checked, and to me that is INSANE for only one channel. Not OP, but I have the same problem & question.
